Sport Northern Ireland (Sport NI) in conjunction with the NI Commonwealth Games Council (NICGC) has established a 2010 Preparation Committee whose mission is:
"through open and transparent co-operation by all stakeholders who are charged with developing sport and sports people, to ensure that we provide the most effective environment and support systems to allow our athletes to thrive and develop to their highest potential".
The draft Strategy for Sport and Physical Recreation 2008-2018 has identified a target of five medals at the 19th Commonwealth Games which will take place from 3 to 14 October 2020.
Using the competencies and skills of its membership and seeking advice from relevant experts, the Delhi 2010 Preparation Committee will advise Sport NI as to the best use of resources in support of those athletes demonstrating the potential to compete and succeed at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
In its advisory role, the Committee will consider and provide advice on the following three interrelated parts of performance sport development:
- best practice governing body and athlete planning
- the development of skills and competencies of coaches and governing body officials working with selected athletes prior to and during the Games, as a means of optimising athletic performance and
- the development and provision of best practice support services to athletes and coaches in the attainment of sporting success.
In addition to NICGC and Sport NI representation, governing bodies of sport and the Sports Institute for Northern Ireland are also represented on the Committee, thus ensuring that a mix of skills and competencies exist.
The Delhi 2010 Preparation Committee will meet at least every two months and at each meeting, there will be an opportunity for the Committee to revisit a draft action plan which outlines the work which must be undertaken in the run up to the Games.
A copy of the current Action Plan is available to download.
