Sports Development Officers

A network of Sports Development Officers now exists within Northern Ireland. The SDO's fall into two main categories:

1. District Council / Neighbourhood SDO's
2. Education SDO's

Local / Neighbourhood SDO's work at developing local sporting opportunities. Their job is ultimately about helping to realise/create an environment whereby all those interested in taking part in sport are able to do so at a level suited to their needs.

Key areas of work include:

  • helping clubs to develop junior sections
  • developing good club/school links
  • running a menu of training courses to help meet club/needs
  • major local events eg. Performance schools of sport
  • supporting local sports advisory committees
  • assisting with youth sport programmes

Education SDO's are responsible for the management of the Youth sport programme within the Education and Library Board area.

Key areas of work include:

  • appointment and training of school co-ordinators
  • co-ordination of coaching programmes
  • developing club/school links
  • publicity and promotion
  • providing regional performance opportunities
